There’s not much that’s more satisfying than entertaining family around the farm.

I caught our cows Sweetie (red/white) and Bossy (black/white) on tape during a recent shoving match. They are a breed of beef cow called Belted Galloways aka “Belties” for their big white belts around the middle. They are half sisters and are both actually very social; but cows do use their weight and their big heads to push just about anything out of the way. I was reminded of this the other day when Sweetie accidentally stepped on my foot!

I received my Father’s Day gift a day early, a miniature pig that I’ve been wanting forever. It’s about six weeks old and is about the size of a rabbit. It will only get to be around 20 lbs full grown. It’s safe in our house tonight and will spend some time in a secure horse stall before it will be big
enough to graduate outside with the rest of the animals. It loves to be held close and she’ll let out a super loud squeal when she’s afraid. The kids love her and she’ll be a fun addition to the kid friendly Galloway Farm herd.

Every now and then a plan comes together and our farm projects turn out better than we hoped. Our garden is full of squash and watermelons and tomatoes and carrots and onions and all sorts of fun things!

Here are some shots from earlier this spring when we planted our first family garden. Our “projects” don’t always turn out like we hope, but we were hopeful and enjoyed the time we spent together working.

We picked some small cucumbers from our garden to make into homemade pickles. We boiled the potent smelling pickling concoction, then put it all in a jar. And in just 3 short weeks, we’ll enjoy our very first batch of Galloway pickles!

We recently experienced a lesson in good things coming to those who wait. We planted blueberry bushes last year. We’ve waited patiently for the tiny green berries to ripen and finally a few turned blue enough to sample.

Our family is so thankful for all of the soldiers who have laid down their lives so that we can enjoy freedom.

Once the sun goes down, the frogs begin their song. For eight to nine hours, these giant bull frogs belt out their chorus without stopping. This video is completely black since I shot it at night in the dark; but turn your speakers way up and take a listen.
