Our two friendly Canadian Geese made their return this week. They fly in each winter and stay through spring. We named them Goosey and Gander the first year we owned the farm and we always look forward to their visits.
One step closer to manhood, the boys enjoy building their own fire next to Daddy’s on cold January days.
They’ve also taken over a stall in the barn and declared it as ‘the fort’.

And there’s nothing like the taste of fire roasted slim jim to keep things interesting.

We had a mild 60 degree New Years Eve that gave us just the excuse we needed for some extra family time out doors.

Our schedule has been so busy that we made the rare decision to skip Sunday pm church. And on Sunday afternoon after I long nap, I sat straight up and in a very decisive voice said to my wife, “I need to be outside.”. And within about 15 minutes I had grabbed the boys and was headed to the farm. You’d be amazed what a couple of hours of fire building will do to revitalize cooped up dads and boys.

Winter gives us time to do some fun projects in preparation for the next year’s party season. One fun project is our loft. We have a huge open loft in the top of our barn; but the access to it was rough. So we recently tore out the loft ladder and built this new wider, safer stair case out of cedar. It looks awesome and smells even better. Some of the cedar posts even came from the farm. And here’s a sneak peek at the loft, though it’s still under construction. We’re in the process of opening it up and cleaning it up now. When it’s done, it will be a perfect place for a dinner, songwriter’s night, etc. for 75 or so people.

We recently removed a room in our barn that I knew had something living under it. So removing the room should remove the stow-a-way right? Not so easy. Whatever it was has come back in and has now dug this football sized hole. The problem is, it’s digging underneath my new stair case that leads up to the loft. And enough digging under the newly set posts could compromise the safety of the stairs. That means we’ve got to catch him and re-locate him to a new home. But what is it? A huge rat? Groundhog maybe? Do opossums dig? Guess it’s time to get out the hidden camera and try to catch him on film to see what it is….but what do YOU think it is? Comment on this post and take your best guess. There’s no prize for being right, but you’ll be able to say you were right when I post his debut video soon.

A while back, a couple flattered us by asking to have their wedding at our farm and it was a gorgeous wedding. Then another couple asked to have a wedding next May, then another couple for the following weekend next May… I absolutely love it when other people enjoy the use of our farm, and I love big parties and weddings. So what better way to share the farm than to officially open it for rustic, farm weddings?! We’re now booking dates for 2012 weddings, private events, family reunions, off site business meetings, photo shoots, etc.
It’s mostly for fun, so we’re trying to keep the costs well below other similar venues and we’ll be using the fees to keep making the farm a beautiful place for special moments like weddings. I had a web site built to show plenty of pics. Feel free to send it to anyone you think might enjoy a fun farm wedding next year. www.thegallowayfarm.com

Our family took advantage of a gorgeous fall Sunday afternoon recently. From lying on a big blanket together to testing the limits of our swings and seesaws to watching our youngest two enjoy some play time together, it was the perfect way to relax and enjoy a few hours of fun together.
