Goosey & Gander

Each spring, these two geese we affectionately named Goosey & Gander return to our pond to build a nest and raise goslings.  There are six eggs in the nest and we look forward to the pitter patter of little webbed feet soon!

Persimmon & Goosey seem to have an understanding for now…

Today we celebrated Winston’s second birthday.  He is our youngest and is growing up too fast!  It was our first birthday party at the farm this year.  The weather was awesome and all of the family had a wonderful afternoon outside.

Cousin Violet raised over $30 for the homeless and she’ll donate it at church tomorrow.

A Balmy 30 Degrees

30 degrees and sunny felt like beach weather after the super cold last week. The kids and I soaked up the sunshine and crisp winter air.

After a trip to Bonnie’s Barnyard, everyone pitches in to unload feed and supplies.

We give the animals a little sweet feed as a winter time treat.

Meet Christmas

After the loss of Pearl, it was a fun Christmas surprise when an 8 month old Southdown Babydoll arrived at the farm today. After a brief introduction to the kids, “Christmas” went to meet the other animals.

A Sad Day On The Farm

Today we found our beloved Southdown Babydoll sheep, Pearl, passed away in the field. Our animals are all pets and we’ll miss her. It is an opportunity to introduce children to the cycle of life around the farm. We all helped dig a grave for Pearl and we can tell the other animals don’t quite understand. She was a good sheep.

Sycamores

It’s no secret that I love to plant trees. Several times each year I can be found planting interesting types of trees around the farm with our children. They love helping and it’s fun for them to learn about different trees.

This weekend we planted my favorite tree of all, American Sycamores. I love those giant leaves and scaly grey bark. We planted four together in an effort to recreate this look that we saw at camp earlier this summer:

We also planted a White Birch and a Quaking Aspen.

Gotta love Lola Jane’s fashion statement of John Deere & Hello Kitty.

Chestnuts!

Roasting chestnuts is easy & fun. If you have access to a chestnut tree, grab a bucketful. Wait till the spiky husks fall from the tree and the nuts will usually just be laying everywhere under the tree. You can open the soft shells and eat the nuts raw or follow these easy steps to roast them:
– select big healthy looking chestnuts from your bucket
– using a sharp paring knife, cut slits in the pointed end of the chestnut
– this allows the shells to expose the nut as they roast and it prevents them from exploding (seriously!)
– spread them out on a baking pan
– bake @ 350-ish degrees for about 40 minutes
– enjoy them while they’re hot!

What a perfect fall night for a party! 200+ of our team and their spouses and their kids having a ball. A perfect combination of ribs, friends, cool air and bluegrass. There’s no better way to bond with your work buddies than hanging out around a fire and fixing smores for each others kids.
